THE BRIEF
The technical core of a five-storey Camps Bay residence, rebuilt to make a sophisticated Control4, audiovisual, network and security system organised, dependable and straightforward to maintain.
This project began as a detailed investigation into intermittent operational issues across a large integrated home. The residence includes seven television zones, a dedicated home cinema, distributed audio, whole-home Wi-Fi, extensive CCTV and Control4 interfaces across five levels.
Rather than addressing individual symptoms in isolation, Mirror Edge Networks recommended rebuilding the central equipment environment. The existing racks were stripped back to the incoming infrastructure, every cable was identified and the complete server room was reorganised around clear system roles, logical signal flow and future service access.
The client wanted the technology in the house to operate predictably, but also wanted the server room itself to reflect the quality of the finished residence. It needed to be more than visually tidy: technicians had to be able to trace connections, access equipment, perform remote restarts and make future changes without disturbing unrelated systems.
The solution therefore had to balance three priorities—reliability, serviceability and presentation—while continuing to support a substantial live system used throughout the home.
A Complete Infrastructure Reset
The rebuild started with careful documentation and removal. Existing equipment and terminations were taken back methodically so that the underlying cabling could be tested, identified and assigned to the correct system.
The room was then rebuilt around three dedicated racks. A wall-mounted swing-frame rack became the central network and structured-cabling hub, while two 27U floor-standing racks separated audio and security equipment from video sources and Control4 processing.
This separation makes the system easier to understand at a glance and reduces congestion around high-density equipment. It also gives each rack a clear purpose, improving airflow, cable routing and access for maintenance.
Three Racks, Each with a Defined Role
The wall-mounted 18U swing-frame rack houses the network gateway, PoE switching, patch panels and structured terminations. Its hinged design allows access to the rear of the cabling without dismantling the rack, an important practical detail in a system of this scale.
The first floor-standing rack is dedicated to multiroom audio and CCTV recording. It accommodates the Rotel multi-zone amplifiers and network video recorder, keeping audio amplification and security equipment together in a controlled, serviceable area.
The second floor-standing rack contains video-distribution sources and the main Control4 processor. DStv decoders, Apple TV devices, the video matrix and central Control4 controller are organised as one coherent entertainment platform.
Network and Wi-Fi Infrastructure
A dependable home network and Wi-Fi system is the foundation beneath every other service in the house. The rack supports seven wireless access points, 31 general data points, Control4 room controllers and touchscreens, CCTV cameras and distributed-video endpoints.
PoE network switching supplies power and connectivity to compatible access points, cameras and control interfaces. Network-enabled power distribution units also allow selected equipment to be monitored or restarted remotely, helping resolve certain service issues without waiting for an on-site visit.
Control4 and Whole-Home Operation
At the time of the installation, a Control4 EA-5 served as the main processor, supported by seven room controllers. Four 10-inch wall-mounted touchscreens were positioned around the property for convenient access to home functions and communication with the 2N entrance station.
Handheld Control4 remotes in the bedrooms bring DStv, Apple TV, Samsung televisions and audio under one familiar interface. The complex rack infrastructure remains largely invisible to the family; its purpose is to make everyday operation feel simple.
The server room also supports the wider Camps Bay Control4 whole-home automation project, including the residence’s entertainment, networking, cinema and security systems.
Distributed Television and Multiroom Audio
A Control4 video matrix distributes television sources to seven displays and the dedicated home cinema. Centralising the sources reduces duplication and allows the family to access familiar entertainment throughout the property.
For music, a Control4 audio matrix feeds two six-channel Rotel multiroom amplifiers connected to Monitor Audio in-ceiling loudspeakers. Speaker connections terminate on dedicated Speakon panels, keeping the audio wiring secure, clearly labelled and easy to isolate when required.
CCTV and Security Connectivity
The network rack also supports 27 CCTV cameras, including three pan-tilt-zoom cameras. Bringing camera connectivity, PoE switching and recording infrastructure into the same planned environment makes the security system easier to monitor and maintain.
The 2N door station integrates with the Control4 touchscreens, allowing the home’s access and intercom functions to sit alongside its other everyday controls.
Colour-Coded Cabling and Cable Management
Colour coordination gives each cable group an immediate visual identity. Short, handmade CAT6 patch leads in red, blue, pink and grey distinguish different services and replace unnecessary loops of excess cable.
Six CAT6 patch panels provide orderly termination, while the two floor-standing racks sit on a custom 400 mm server riser. This creates a concealed route for cables entering from below and prevents the floor area around the racks from becoming congested.
White LED lighting around the riser and within the three racks is both functional and architectural. It improves visibility during service work while giving the completed installation a finish appropriate to the rest of the property.

Designed for Serviceability
A well-built rack is not only neat on completion day. It should remain understandable years later, when equipment is serviced, sources are upgraded or the homeowner’s requirements change.
Clear labelling, short signal paths, remote power management, accessible rear cabling and separation between network, audio, video and security systems all reduce the time and risk involved in future work. This is the practical value behind the visual order.
The Result
The finished server room became a technical environment the client could feel confident in. More importantly, it provided a stable and maintainable foundation for the technology used across the entire five-storey home.
This project demonstrates that remedial work can do more than correct immediate faults. With proper planning, an inherited system can be reorganised into infrastructure that is easier to operate, support and evolve.
